“An Explosion of Gulls”
Paddling back to shore along the breakwater, I frightened some Silver Gulls and was delighted to capture them fleeing into the sky.
The energy and chaos of seagulls startled into the air — a great idea for a mosaic to fill an empty space on a house wall.

The Design
Capturing the energy of the gulls meant combing through my video footage and other photos to find birds in dynamic shapes and compiling these into a composition.

Making
Once I made the framed cement board, I transferred on the design and began fixing down the tessera (cut tiles).
The Finished Work
During the making, I imaged the background as a dynamic vortex and so I took a risk and added the swirling effect.
