‘Dexter’ - A Pet Portrait
What can I say about Dexter, or ‘The Dex’ as I affectionately call him? When I first met him at the gate, he was a feisty little fellow. But once his owners ushered me inside and I settled into an armchair, Dexter jumped into my lap as if we were best friends. To this day, he greets me with a mix of aggression and affection.
The Commission
Ralph and Margie, are friends who often helped me hang my larger mosaics. We would always end our sessions with a drink and a chat. After Margie asked for the third time if I’d create a mosaic of their beloved chihuahua, Dexter, I finally said yes. They had been so supportive of my work, I couldn’t refuse, even though the idea of pet portraits hadn’t initially appealed to me.

Design Phase
Ralph and Margie have a strong appreciation for pop culture, which immediately brought to mind Andy Warhol’s iconic prints of Marilyn Monroe. They liked this idea, so I set out to create a vibrant and unique design of Dexter in that style.

Making
I found myself thoroughly enjoying the project. Capturing Dexter’s distinct personality was a challenge, but one that I relished. Margie asked for some colour changes under Dexter’s chin before the grouting process. Ralph suggested the subway tiles for the background. Ralph and Margie’s creative choices made the process and final work extra special.

The Finished Work
The final piece was met with enthusiastic approval from Margie and Ralph, who exclaimed:
‘That’s Dexter!’
