‘Girl and Her Dog’ - A Portrait
Daisy had many posed photos, but I wanted to capture something candid, so I asked her mum to try and take a spontaneous photo. When I received this image, I was delighted.
When I asked Daisy what she wanted in the mosaic, she was keen to include her dog and Mr Percival from ‘Storm Boy.’
Design
To start, I made a few adjustments to the original photo:
Removed Daisy’s Little Brother. Sorry, Little Bro…
I tucked the dog further under Daisy’s forearm.
Altered the angle of her back and changed the colour of her top to turquoise, Daisy’s favourite colour.
At Daisy’s mum’s request, I reduced the contrast in the colours of Daisy’s face.
Added Mr Percival and Included the beloved pelican to complete the composition.
Once these changes were made, Daisy’s mum was very happy to sign off on the design. I felt confident that I had captured the bright, happy, and outward-looking spirit of Daisy. My goal was now to reflect these qualities in the final mosaic.

Making ‘A Girl and Her Dog’
I framed the cement board, drew on the design outline, and began cutting and fixing the tile, focussing on getting the likeness right.
